1901 NEW ZEALAND HANDICAP In 1901 the New Zealand Handicap, the forerunner of the Cup, was confined to horses that could do 5 min or better for two miles and according to "The Referee", "an excellent field of seven went to the post." Mr T Yarr's Monte Carlo, the outsider, won comfortably in 4:50 4-5 beating Albert and Victory. The unplaced horses were Vickery, The Heir, What and All Day.
