RACING HISTORY FEATURE RACE COMMENT

Albert H & A Hendrickson
1912 NEW ZEALAND TROTTING CUP

The siring influence of Rothschild was never better illustrated when he was represented by seven sons, three grandsons and one great grandson, and the first three home were by him, a feat only later matched by Light Brigade.

This was further underlined by the fact that the winner Albert H, who outfinished Ravenschild and Glendalough in the slog home, was from a mare by the thoroughbred Son of a Gun, who had been runner-up in the NZ Cup at Riccarton in 1888.

Grand mare Emmeline, who held the national mile record, gave away starts of eight to nine seconds to most of the field.

CLUB HISTORY FIRES & THEIR PREVENTION

The first fire reported on in the NZ REFEREE was an outbreak one afternoon in October 1912 when eight or ten horse boxes in the outside enclosure, adjoining the Canterbury A & P Assn’s property, were destroyed together with a number of boxes in the Showgrounds. If the fire had not been discovered early considerably more damage would have resulted. The boxes which were destroyed were replaced in time for the Cup Meeting.
